Web Lawn Chairs - Buying New, Used or Fixing the Old
By Kate Neville

You probably know what web lawn chairs are. Also known as strap chairs, web lawn chairs typically have a tubular aluminum frame with straps of vinyl, nylon, or polyester and are woven to create a sturdy back and seat. Strap lawn chairs can be just standard upright chairs or chaise lounge chairs. The strength and thinness of the fabrics used to create the webbing make its use for outdoor furniture ideal.

Most people don't analyze their web lawn chairs very much. Chances are even you have at least one old webbed chair hanging around, maybe from a hook on your garage wall. They dominated yards, patios, and soccer games for decades, but with the advent of new portable chair designs, they're harder to find than ever.

If you're a diehard fan of web lawn chairs, the good news is that you can still find new ones around if you look hard enough. You can also easily and inexpensively repair the webbing on your old lawn chairs, so don't throw them away just yet.

Before you repair your web lawn chair, you'll need to inspect the frame for any areas that are rusted or damaged. There's no point replacing the webbing if the frame won't hold up for much longer. The next step is to remove the damaged strap from your chair. If you're just updating the look of your chair, or you want to keep it looking uniform, consider removing all the webbing. If you do this, you might want to do it one strip at a time so that it's easier to figure out the weaving pattern. Nylon webbing is typically held in place with screws, so have the appropriate screwdriver handy.

Webbing for lawn chairs comes in different widths, so make sure you're getting the right one. Most chairs use 2 Ľ inch webbing. Beware of all the lovely tubular webbing that's widely available online. It's only 1 inch wide and it's usually meant for climbing and not webbing for lawn chairs. Check out the webbing kits to be sure you have all the components you need. They're very inexpensive and come in a huge variety of colors. One kit will typically re-web 1 standard chair. You'll need two kits if you want to re-web a chaise lounger style lawn chair. When you're done, take a rest on the result of your hard work with a nice glass of lemonade!
